2/15/11 - South 57 - Bartlett
68 The Black and Gold came to play on their Senior Night against
the Bartlett Bears on Tuesday, giving the fans an exciting game to the end. David Bullock
took over this game for South, ending the game with 18 points, several steals, and a handful of
rebounds. After leading by three at half time however, the Wolverines let the game slowly
slip away. Excellent hustle on defense and a frantic pace on offense kept the Bears on their
heels, but two crucial turnovers with just a minute left drove them into a hole and South just
couldn't claw its way back into the lead. The Wolverine Seniors gave it their all for the
last time on their home court, and let the record show that South's win-loss percentage in no way
reflects the effort and hard work these young men put in this year:
#3 TJ McKinney - The Bomber. The purest 3 point shooter on the
squad, TJ could bomb from waaaay outside that three point line and had a darn
good completion percentage to boot. Definitely a hustler on defense, TJ loved
to anticipate the steal, then get all four limbs a-flyin' as he drove from coast to coast
with solid finishes. Although he only drew one 3-shot foul all year, there seemed
to be a magical force that threw him sliding back on his behind after releasing that
three more often than not.
#5 David Bullock - Mr. Solid-State. David was always
there, bringing the ball up without alot of fanfare, getting the offense going, and making the
occasional three. He really earned his keep on the defensive side, causing all types of
havok in the opponent's backcourt. David has that sixth sense for getting his
hand out at just the right time and causing that turnover or steal. Nothing
fazed Mr. Solid-State.
#11 Tommy Walker - The Creator. Tommy Walker just makes
things happen. Dribbling up the court with his patented low-dribble, almost
taunting the poor defender to try and take it, Tommy drives, cuts, and finesses his way
to the hoop. Weaving through all five defenders, somehow he makes it to the hoop, and
pulls up with an un-believable soft touch for two points.
#15 Logan McGinnis - The Pounder. Logan is about 4 feet shorter than
any other forward or center in the league, and for my money I wouldn't want anyone else in the
paint for my team. Logan pounded on defense, punishing anyone that dared come inside, and
then he would pound on offense. Logan posted up like a 7-footer, turned, and somehow got that
shot up through the trees on the right side of the hoop. South should bronze the spot on the
right side of basket and emblazon number 15 on it.
#21 Max Edlund - The Slasher. If the team needed a spark off the bench,
they turned to Max. His electrifying play brought the house to their feet everytime. He
forced turnovers on defense, and slashed to the hoop, with or without the ball, on offense, often
giving his teammates a beautiful target and making them look brilliant for such a great pass and
easy layup. Max has two speeds... off and full throttle, he doesn't know how to not give
110%.
#23 Jared Cossaboom. Mr. Dependable (a.k.a. Mr. Serious). Jared is
one of those no-nonsense players that simply gets the job done. Whether it's bringing the
ball up the court, getting a defensive stop, or nailing an important jumper, Jared will get it
done. No pomp and circumstance for Mr. Dependable (a.k.a. Mr. Serious), he just gets it done
with nary a smile on his face.
#33 Kyle Weir - Mr. Blue Collar. Kyle has done nothing
more all year than put his nose to the grindstone and work. Every minute he gets
in, he busts his tail up and down the court, getting rebounds, posting up, and
stopping the opposing big men from getting to the hoop. Solid passing, tough
defense, and no complaining are Kyle's trademarks.
#34 Tommy Hobbs - Red Thunder. No one on the team has brought the
crowd to its feet more often than Tommy Hobbs. Whether it was humiliating the opposing team
with an in-your-face, out-of-my-kitchen rejection, or a thunderous, out-of-nowhere monster dunk,
Tommy thrilled the Wolverine faithful routinely.
#42 Matt Liverance - The Enforcer. Pity the foolish
offender who tried coming into the paint with Matt in the game. Matt's tough play,
extreme hustle, and unwaivering committment to his team make him a vital part of the Wolverines,
grabbing boards, checking opponents, and wreaking havok on the inside.
#45 Mitch Bustamante - Mr. Basic. South's soccer player turned
hooper, Mitch was quick on the uptake. Every week his skills increased and his hoop knowledge
grew and he became more and more valuable to the team. Mitch hustled, boxed out, set picks,
and did all the little things right as the season progressed. Focussed on the basics, Mitch has
become a solid, contributing member of the Black and Gold.
The Wolverine fans thank the 2011 seniors for a great year and many
exciting games on the home hardwood. Good luck in regions and beyond!
2/12/11 - South 68 - Palmer
56 The South High Wolverines had to travel all the way to Palmer to
find their offense again on Saturday night. The Wolverines worked through their
offenseive sets, moving the ball well, and spreading the scoring across the team. Solid
shooting by Tommy Walker, Logan McGinnis, Max Edlund, TJ Mckinney, and Matt Liverance
jumpstarted their game in the first half. Attacking the basket was the key to creating
offense as Walker, McKinney, and Edlund shredded the Moose zone for lay-ups or dishes for easy
jumpshots. Palmer was tough on the offensive glass in the first half however, keeping
the game within a few points at the half.
South kept the pressure on in the second half, pushing the ball up
the floor, and rotating their defense between man-to-man, 2-3 zone, and a full-court zone
trap. David Bullock continues to impress on defense, always getting hands in the passing
lanes and causing havock in the backcourt. Tommy Walker kept pressure on the Moose defense by
pusing the ball into the paint, and Tommy Hobbs worked well on the post as he turned and drove
the lane himself. Kyle Weir put in a great perfomance on the boards and Logan McGinnis
actually made it to the end of the game without 5 fouls. The Black and Gold steamed ahead in
the fourth quarter and won 68-56.
2/11/11 - South 50 - East
65 South High got off to a cooooooold start on Friday night against
the East Thunderbirds at home. The T-birds 2-3 zone kept the Wolverines out of the paint and
their cold shooting put a stop to their offense. Max "The Slasher" Edlund however provided
the 1st quarter spark with his signature slash to the hoop for a layup, finally kicking South into
gear.
After only 5 points in the first quarter, the Wolverines started to heat
up as Logan McGinnis pounded away inside getting boards and put-backs for points. David
Bullock sparked the defense with several tips and steals as the Wolverines fought back to a three
point deficit going into half, 25-28.
A slow start hampered South's comeback in the third quarter, but more
hustle by Bullock and some play-making by Tommy Walker off the drive created several lay-ups,
but just enough to keep the spread 37-41 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter kept the same story, lots of hustle on defense, steals
and hard work.... but no one could turn those into offense. They fought back to within 7
points with 1 minute left with shots by Kyle Weir and Tommy Walker. But in the end the Black
and Gold couldn't overcome a cold night on offense and lost 50-65.
2/9/11 - South 44 - West 70
2/7/11 South 56 Chugiak
53 The South High Wolverines took on a tough Chugiak Mustang squad
on their home floor Monday night. The Wolverines played solid defense in an even first
quarter that ended in a 16-16 tie. Three pointers from David Bullock and TJ Mckinney provided
the offensive spark, as well as slashing cuts by Max Edlund off the bench. South went cold in
the second quarter, with Logan McGinnis taking a feed from Bullock for a layup to break a 4 minute
drought. The Mustangs were able to get several second shots and worked their way to a 3 point
lead at half, 27-30.
In a back and forth third quarter, both teams worked hard on their
pressure defense. The Wolverines were able to force turnovers, and Tommy Hobbs drilled a
three pointer to put South up 44-41 at the end of 3.
The Black and Gold kept their composure through the fourth quarter, even
as the lead bounced back and forth between the two teams. Slashing cuts by McKinney and
threes from Hobbs kept the Wolverines in the lead by 1 with just a minute to go. Bullock took
the ball on a nerve-racking, 20-second, Curly Neal-style dribble off, and managed to keep
control and get away from the defense. McKinney finally got fouled and with ice in his veins,
nailed both free throws to get South up by three. With 4.3 seconds left to get a shot off,
the Mustangs were unable to get past the Wolverine defense and the Black and Gold got the
win.
2/4/11 South 47 Dimond 60 The
Wolverines took their home floor in a rematch of a game they played just 3 days before against the
Dimond High School Lynx. South was hoping to use the extra minutes and extend their come from
behind efforts from the previous night, and early on it looked like they did just that. The
Wolverines came out with tenacious defense, Tommy Hobbs was bodying up on the Lynx Rydin Hines and
keeping him from getting anything in the paint. On the other side of the lane, Logan McGinnis
banged away and as usual picked up several post points against a much larger Dimond front line.
David Bullock created havok on the perimeter, picking off passes and harrassing the Lynx
guards. The home team spread the scoring as well with 5 different players contributing early
on. South looked dominant with a 16-9 lead at the end of the first.
The Lynx tried their extended half-court trapping defense in the second
quarter, but South kept their composure. Tommy Walker controlled the tempo of the game very
well, creating offense and generating points off the dribble. South's 2-3 zone once again had
the Lynx stumped as the Wolverines extended on the perimeter and forced several turnovers.
Dimond whittled away at the lead though, behind Dylan Lauwers' three point shooting, and went to
the locker room with only a point between them, South 25, Dimond 24.
The third quarter has been South's nemesis this year, and this game proved
to follow the same pattern. Dimond's constant harrassment on the perimeter began to force
some South turnovers while the Wolverine offense went cold. The Black and Gold never gave up,
and hung between 3 and 7 points down all the way through the second half. They made an
excellent defensive run with a few minutes to go, stealing several balls in the backcourt right
underneath Dimond's hoops, but just couldn't convert those to points. And in the end,
South's lack of offense just couldn't overcome the defecit and Dimond pulled away 60-47. Max
Edlund and Kyle Weir provided an excellent spark off the bench for South, Tommy Walker led the
scoring with 14 points and Tommy Hobbs had 8
2/2/11 South 55, Dimond
60 Tommy Hobbs came from out of nowhere to soar above the hoop
and jam home a ball that had bounced harmlessly straight above the rim. The thunder dunk woke
up the crowd and more importantly the South High Wolverines who had fallen into an unproductive
offensive slump in the second half of their game against the Dimond Lynx Tuesday night.
Later, Hobbs would followed up with a three pointer, several steals, and David Bullock added a
long range three to get the Wolverines within 3 points with only a minute to go.
The game began as a defensive battle, both teams playing very physical and
forcing the opposing team to earn every point. Logan McGinnis banged away at a much taller
Dimond front line, intimidating them from the get-go. Tommy Walker led South in the first
half with a soft touch on medium-range shots and floaters in the lane. South's 2-3 zone
seemed to stump the Lynx as they moved the ball around the perimeter but were unable to penetrate
or get it into their top weapon, center Rydin Hines. The Wolverines were unable to take
advantage however as they stayed cold from the perimeter as well. Jared Cossaboom, TJ
McKinney, and David Bullock did a good job handling the ball and avoiding an aggressive 1/2 court
trap put on by the Lynx. Dimond led by just 2 at the half, 20-18.
The opening of the third quarter belonged to the Lynx, and proved to be
the deciding minutes of this ball game. A series of turnovers led to quick transition baskets
and Dimond jumped out to a 32-18 lead in just the first few minutes of the second half. South
never gave up and continued to fight, closing out the third down 38-27.
The fourth quarter was a frantic paced game with the Black and Gold
pressing, and the Lynx trying to slow the pace. Max Edlund led a fresh squad in the
middle of the fourth that seemed to spark the Wolverines. Edlund had several steals and
converted those to points along with tough inside man McGinnis. South forced a
string of double digit turnovers, scoring over 25 points in the fourth quarter as they hustled,
slashed, and banged their way back into the game. Dimond held their poise, converting on
missed assignments by the Wolverine's press, and most importantly hitting their free-throws down
the stretch. South closed it down to a one posession game with a minute to go, but couldn't
knock down the all-important three in the closing seconds.
Tommy Hobbs led all scorers with 22 points, and Tommy Walker added 12 for
the Wolverines. Dylan Lauwers and Rydin Hines led the Lynx with 18
each.
1/25/11 - Service 66, South 60 Service
withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally Tuesday, hanging on for a 66-60 win over South in a CIC
boys basketball game at South.
Service's Adam Klie led all scorers with 30 points and pulled down 11
rebounds. Amu Aukusitino pitched in 18 points for the Cougars, who led by 19 at halftime.
Service cooled off down the stretch, only hitting one field goal in the
final quarter. That's when South, led by Tommy Walker's 18 points and T.J. McKinney's 14 points,
starting heating up. The Wolverines outscored the Cougars 22-10 in the fourth quarter.
1/19/11 The South Wolverines showed up Wednesday night
against Eagle River in front of their home crowd with the one aspect of their game that has
been missing; defense. They charged to a 9-0 lead behind a tough zone press;
trapping the inbounds pass, stealing the ball, and converting those steals to points. Tommy
Hobbs, TJ McKinney, and Tommy Walker rained down threes allowing the starting five to
take a break after gathering a 19-8 lead. Matt Liverance, Kyle Weir, Max Edlund, Jerod
Cossaboom, and Tanner Evans took over and held their own against the
Wolves starters. After one quarter South had built themselves a 24-17 lead.
Tommy Walker was Mr. Hustle in the second quarter, stealing balls in
the backcourt, diving for loose balls, and driving the lane at will against the
visiting Wolves. Max Edlund took over half-way through, flying through the
air, throwing his body into harm's way, and sinking his running floaters. With Enrique Morgan
taking the court at the 2 minutes mark, every member of the Black and Gold saw playing
time in the first half. At half-time the Wolverines scored a solid 50 points, but more
importantly, had held Eagle River to 30.
The third quarter was much the same, Edlund and Walker busting up the
Wolves' front court, Hobbs and McGinnis ruling the boards, and David Bullock and Jerod Cossaboom
calmly setting up the offense. When the fourth quarter rolled around, Zach Lujan, Tanner
Evans, Matt Liverance, Kyle Weir, and Enrique Morgan saw some serious minutes... doing their own
damage and keeping the pressure on. Weir and Liverance posted up solidly in the lane, Weir
delivering a nice jump hook while Liverance pounded in on the baseline. Morgan slashed and
cut, attempting a double-pump woopty-doo in the lane that didn't fall, but getting the final 2
points to finish up the win 90-57. Hobbs led all scorers with 23 points while Walker added 21 and
Edlund floated in 10. In a solid team effort, every Wolverine except one
scored.1/15/11 SAHS went into the Lion's den at the Anchorage
Christian School and found themselves in for a 32 minute battle. TJ McKinney
and Tommy Hobbs started the game big, hitting three pointers to drive the Wolverine score
up fast. ACS answered quickly though, pushing the ball up the court and converting on the
transition offense. Kyle Weir added four points and several boards to keep the game tied at
23 at the end of one quarter.
David Bullock lead an improved defense in the second quarter and
the Wolverines were able to force several turnovers. Tommy Walker brought his transition
game to South's offense and edged out a lead going into halftime, 50-44.
The Lions came out quick in the third quarter, adding solid perimeter
shooting to their up-tempo fastbreaking game as they clawed their way back to a one point
game. Logan McGinnis continually banged on the boards, putting several back in for points as
Tommy Hobbs rained in a few more of his 5 three pointers on the day. Tough, hard-nosed play
held ACS at bay, and the Black and Gold held on to a tenuous 1 point lead, 66-65.
The Wolverines, who had been relying on excellent three point shooting all
game, went cold at the beginning of the fourth. The Lions kept up their relentless fastbreak
attack and forced an 8 point lead with three minutes left. South never gave up, battling
every second of the last two minutes, and despite a heroic defensive effort they couldn't convert
on the offensive end and dropped the game 95-84. Wes Arnes led all scorers with 27, Tommy
Hobbs led south with 25 and Tommy Walker added 21.
1/11/11 The South High Wolverines took to the road against
the Bartlett Bears Tuesday night and came away wanting. The Bears seemingly could not miss as
they stormed to a 15-0 lead. The Wolverines battled back to keep themselves in the game, but
faltered half way throught the second quarter, falling behind 48-19 at the half.
The second half continued the one-sided romp as the Black and Gold
couldn't right the ship. Bartlett ended with an 81-60 win. Tommy Walker debuted for
South and was able to get in 20 points while David Bullock had a good shooting game and added
13.
1/8/11 - South @ East South lead from wire to wire on
Saturday night as they avenged a close loss earlier in the season and took a win from the East High
Thunderbirds in the T-birds own house. The Wolverines heated up early behind solid shooting
from Tommy Hobbs and TJ McKinney while Logan McGinnis simply pounded the boards on both ends
of the floor. The key, however, was ball control. David Bullock and Jerod Cossaboom
handled the press beautifully in the first quarter, turning the ball over only once as South
charged to a 24-16 lead at the end of the first.
The Thunderbirds battled back in the second quarter, converting on quick
transition baskets as South was slow to get back on the fast-break defense. East heated up
from the perimeter as South went cold, and the T-birds clawed their way back to within one at half,
37-36.
The third quarter belonged to Jerod Cossaboom. Cossaboom had 5
points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and a gorgeous feed to McGinnis slashing to the hoop... all in the
first 2 minutes of the quarter. The fans got a little tennis-style experience as the teams
raced back and forth across the floor. Sloppy ball control for both teams ensued
as they pressured each other on defense. But, behind an amazing effort by Cossaboom
and continued outstanding shooting by McKinney, South was able to extend its lead to 49-44.
McKinney and Bullock hit from three and McGinnis added several buckets off
of the offensive glass to extend the Black and Gold's lead to 10 points and a seemingly easy walk
to the finish line. However, East never gave up. The T-birds amped up their full-court
press and forced three turnovers for six points in 20 seconds of play. The Wolverines had a
game on their hands again. In the clutch, South turned to its expert marksman, and McKinney
drained a long three with 1:10 left to make it 73-67 and put the Black and Gold in the driver's
seat. South controlled the ball for the last minute, and after a wild last second scrum that
left East calling a time-out they didn't have, South walked away from the Thunderbird Coloseum with
a 73-71 win. McKinney led the Wolverines with 23 points, McGinnis was one rebound away from a
double-double, ending with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Cossaboom ended with 14 points and Tommy
Hobbs added 10... not to mention a bleacher-raising, get-out-of-my-house rejection off the
defensive glass.1/4/11 - West @ South
South Anchorage Varsity took their home court for the first time in 2011
against the #1 ranked West Eagles Tuesday. The packed crowd saw an exciting first half with
South leading for much of the first quarter. West came out in a full-court press which the
Wolverines handled with excellent ball movement and minimal turnovers in the first quarter.
Behind solid shooting by Jared Cossaboom, Tommy Hobbs, and TJ McKinney, South lead through four
minutes. Logan McGinnis owned the high post as he delivered several stellar passes to Hobbs
as he slashed to the bucket. Interior passing and ball control kept the Wolverines within 2
buckets at the end of 1.
Defensive hustle by Zach Lujan and a pair of three pointers by Hobbs kept
the Black and Gold within four points for most of the second quarter as well. Kyle Weir,
David Bullock, and McKinney patiently worked the ball back and forth against the press, swinging
West's defense and utilizing McGinnis and Edlund downcourt to good results. South's
half-court defense was solid, keeping hands in the face of some excellent Eagle shooters. The
Wolverine's poise began to show some cracks as West took advantage of several turnovers at the end
of the second quarter and converted on their transition offense, giving the Eagles a halftime lead
40-28.
A spat of turnovers in the third quarter allowed West to cruise to a
double-digit lead as South began to sag under the Eagle's constant full court zone press.
West's Devon Bookert added many of his game high 29 points in the third and effectively took the
Wolverines out of the game. South fought through the fourth quarter, never giving up, but
ended up on the losing end of a 61-87 score.
Hobbs led the Wolverines with 24 points, McGinnis added nine
and McKinney scored eight.
12/30/10 vs. Oscar Romero in Phoenix Donning their
home whites for the final game at the Cactus Jam Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, the South
Wolverines took the court against the Oscar Romero Ravens hailing from Edmonton, Alberta. The
Wolverines charged to a 9-0 lead behind David Bullock and TJ McKinney's three pointers. Louis
Page drained a three pointer as well as they drove the lead to 20-5 at the end of 1. The
second quarter had Kyle Weir, Matt Liverance, Mitch Bustamante, Tanner Evans, and Enrique Morgan
playing tough defense and pushing the score up to 35-13 by the end of the half.
A fast-paced second half created a tennis-match atmosphere as both teams
tried to force turnovers. The turnover margin ended up favoring the Black and Gold, and
McKinney continued to drain shot after shot as they increased their lead to 55-29.
Tommy Hobbs created some offense with slashing drives to the bucket, and Logan McGinnis kept
banging the boards on both the offensive and defensive ends. Bustamante, Liverance, Evans,
Morgan, and Zach Lujan ruled the fourth quarter and ushered in a solid win 65-33 for the
Wolverines.
12/27/10 Suited up in their home whites, the South High Wolverines took the court
against Gilbert Christian in their first game at the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Arizona.
South started the game tough with Tommy Hobbs protecting the basket and TJ McKinney hitting a few
three-pointers and a floater in the lane. But Gilbert Christian forced several turnovers and
took the first quarter lead 19-13. Throughout the second and third quarters, Gilbert settled
into a match-up zone that truly flummoxed the Wolverines. They worked the ball around the
perimeter, but couldn't seem to get an open shot or an open lane to the hoop. An
excellent shooting club, Gilbert Christian kept their press on and pieced together quick
transition buckets with three-pointers to charge ahead, finally ending the game up 83-43.
12/28/10 Outfitted in their visiting black and gold, South
High took on the Elida Bulldogs of Ohio in their second game at the Cactus Jam. The game
began as a tough back and forth battle with slashing drives and close-in shots. Both
teams changed up their defenses from traps to man-to-man to zone and South ended up down 14-12 at
the end of one. The Bulldogs half-court trap forced multiple turnovers in the second quarter
and capitalized with excellent transition offense, steaming to a double digit lead. The
Wolverines never gave up, however, and began to recognize the trap, clawing their way back to
within 9 by half-time.
Excellent 3-point shooting by Elida kept South's charge at bay,
while T.J. McKinney kept drilling his own three-pointers to keep the game within 8 points at the
beginning of the fourth quarter. After trailing most of the game, the Black and Gold refused
to give up, driving up their defensive tempo and forcing some turnovers of their own. Zach
Lujan nailed a 3-pointer to get within 7 points, and Logan McGinnis finished a break-away layup in
traffic to close it to 4. With a few minutes left, David Bullock and McKinney connected on
some long-range shots and Tommy Hobbs drove in a 3-pointer to close the gap to only 1 point, 60-59
with only 15 seconds left. After Elida only converted on one of their free-throws, the
Wolverines had one chance down the court, but fell just short missing two solid chances to tie the
game, ending the game down 61-59. After an excellent fourth quarter of hustle, the Wolverines
fell a hoop shy of a win for the second time in three games.
12/1810 The
Wolverines came up an ant's eyebrow short in a nail-biting seesaw battle with East on Saturday
night in the final game of the Cougar Tipoff Classic.
South opened the game with a salvo of 3-pointers by Tommy Hobbs, Jared
Cossaboom, and TJ McKinney, combined with solid defense and Logan McGinnis battling on the boards
to give them the lead 16-13 at the first break. But the Thunderbird's pressure defense and
up-tempo game forced South into several turnovers that turned into quick transition points for
East. Nevertheless, patience running their half-court offense created solid shots by McGinnis
and McKinney, keeping them in the game as they went to the locker room down only four points,
28-34.
The Wolverines put on some pressure defense of their own, and steals by
David Bullock, Cossaboom, and McGinnis brought on a few transition baskets and a tie.
However, the Thunderbirds were relentless in their attack, and began double-teaming South's guards
which allowed East to run the score a smidge, ending the third down 47-55.
As the fourth quarter opened it looked like East could run
away with it as they pushed their lead to double digits. But the Black and Gold
had other ideas. The Wolverines dug down deep and began to claw their way back into this
game. Tommy Hobbs had 8 points in 3 minutes and all of the Wolverines contributed
as McGinnis snagged a rebound and put it back in to tie the game
at 62. McKinney nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 1:14 left in the game to
give South the lead 65-64. Quickly however, East was able to get 2 points off of their
half-court offense, leaving South with a chance; a few seconds left in the game and
down by one. Their passing was crisp and they got it inside where East had to foul. But
a few missed free-throws and a possible put-back and the game slipped just out of
reach. One more free-throw by East gave them their final score, 65-67.
Great hustle by both teams made for an incredible game for the fans...
right down to the final
second.
12/17/10 The Southside Wolverines took care
of business against Lumen Christi, beating them 84-21 in a one-sided
routing.
12/16/10 - Cougar Tipoff Tournament vs.
Bartlett The Wolverines charged out of the gate Thursday against
Bartlett in the opening game of the Cougar Tipoff Classic leading 22-9 at the end of the first
quarter. Excellent passing and outstanding teamwork picked apart the Golden Bears' pressure
defense as Jared Cossaboom handled the backcourt pressure and Tommy Hobbs owned the boards.
Hobbs sliced to the hoop from high post while Max Edlund and David Bullock fed him in the
lane. Great interior passing led to several easy buckets in the lane for
other Wolverines as well. However, 5 straight turnovers by South in the second
quarter allowed Bartlett to claw back in the game, but a clutch three pointer by TJ McKinney kept
them in a double-digit lead at the half 33-21.
Bartlett kept up their full-court man-to-man pressure, but the Wolverines
kept calm and patiently worked their half-court offense. Points were hard to come by, but
Logan McGinnis banged away on defense against a much bigger opponent and Hobbs had several blocked
shots while the rest of the Wolverines played solid perimeter defense to keep the Bears at bay,
ending the quarter still in the lead 44-33.
A full-court trapping defense and up-tempo game finally began to take its
toll in the fourth quarter as the Black and Gold began to run out of steam. McKinney,
Bullock, and Cossaboom did their best to control the ball against a constant onslought of Bartlett
full-court defenders, but a few crucial turnovers in the middle of the court allowed the Bears a
few easy buckets, and they finally took the lead for the first time with 3 minutes left to go in
the game. After 3 1/2 quarters of excellent basketball, the Wolverines ran out of gas and let
the game slip away, ending up on the short end
54-63.
12/11/10 - Grace @
South T.J. McKinney had all 5 of South's points in the 1st quarter
as the Wolverines took almost the entire first half to get the engine running. But after
trailing 5 to 19 at the end of the first quarter, South fought back to tie it at 19 with
3 minutes left in the half. Even scoring by Tommy Hobbs, Kyle Weir, Max Edlund, and McKinney
brought the team back, trailing only 24-27 at half time.
At the opening of the 3rd quarter, it looked like
Grace would repeat their 1st quarter performance, but tenacious defense by the
Wolverines caused some turnovers and Hobbs began to get some points in the paint,
turning the tide for the Black and Gold. With 3 minutes left in the 3rd, South took the
lead for the first time, 34-32. As the fourth quarter rolled on, South's high pressure
defense began to take effect with great open-court defense by Jared Cossaboom and
Edlund. David Bullock hit a clutch three-pointer extending their lead 40-36 and they
never looked back.
Even scoring, tough defense, and Hobbs owning the boards proved too
much for Grace this year. A team effort to keep their composure allowed the Wolverines to
claw their way back and get their first win ever in this annual non-counting opening game between
the Grizzlies and the
Wolverines.

2/16/11 - South 68 Bartlett 63 Following an exciting C team game the Wolverines and Golden
bears played a 32 minute Battle. The game was officiated by 3 well know officials throughout the
Anchorage basketball community who have refereed countless UAA games over the years. And with
college level officials you get college level play...both teams came out playing physical basketball
and South took advantage down low on the post early and often. In the first quarter South used
good transitions and physical play to score, jumping out to a 15-9 point lead. South’s zone
defense made Bartlett players shoot from outside the key and good rebounding gave the bears only 1 shot
each possession. In the second quarter those Golden Bears were just about golden from the 3 point
line, making 5 of 6 from long range. After the first couple South was forced to come out of their
zone defense switching to man to man full court pressure. Even though South was forced to switch
defenses, their offensive game plan stayed the same… get the ball down low. And the Wolverines
did just that, forcing the ball down low to starters Ezra Afualo and Louis Page. With Bartlett’s
hot shooting South found themselves with a 2 point disadvantage at the half 31-29. In the 3rd
quarter Bartlett, jumped out by hitting a couple buckets extending their lead to 8 points. This
woke up the Wolverines, and 4 possessions later the score was tied 39-39. Back and forth things
went, Bartlett would make a shot then South would make a shot. Then came the play of the day,
with the score tied 45-45, Zach Lujan took the ball from under his own basket, dribbling through
traffic and then with less than 1 second left on the clock he throws up a half court prayer… which to
every bodies amazement (except Zach’s) hits nothing but net, sending the Wolverines to the bench with a
3 point lead. Once the Wolverines got that lead they would not look back, working the ball down
low for good shots and playing pressure defense ensuring the victory for South. Although clutch
free throw shooting from Grant Marciniak making 4 of 4 from the line during the last minute of the game
helped. Game highlights: Grant lead the team with 19 points, Louis Page lead the team with
8 boards, Zack dished out 4 assists, and Dante Williams was the thief of the night with 5 steals.
2/14/11 - South 67 Service 47 The cougars came ready to play Monday night for the last
meeting between the southside rivals. South came out a little sluggish, but good 3 pt
shooting kept them in the game. The first quarter was fast paced and sloppy, Service worked
the ball around the man to man defense and attacked the basket. South on the other hand
worked the ball around Services zone defense and took advantage of some cross court passes to get
open looks at the rim. By the end of the 1st quarter the score was 13-11 Service with the
lead. In the second quarter South continued their good shooting behind the arc hitting 3 of
4, but they continued to have problems converting closer shots. Halftime score South 26
Service 25. In the 3rd quarter pressure defense lead to tough shots for the cougars whose
shooting percentage for the quarter was less than 30%. Although the wolverines
shooting percentage was not much better they extended their lead to 4 points 41-37. In the
4th quarter South finally work up and applied the pressure that they needed the whole game.
Sloppy mistakes by Service helped South pull away and never look back, what helped was out
rebounding the Cougars 14 to 7 in the final frame. Game highlights: Grant Marciniak
Lead the team with 14 points, Ezra Afualo grabbed 8 boards, and Enrique Morgan lead the team with 4
assists and 4 steals.
2/12/11 - South 82 Palmer 80 The South JV team held the dust pan before varsity
completed the sweep of Palmer High School this weekend. South started off the game very well
at one point stretching the lead to 15-3, before Palmer knew what hit them. The first quarter
belonged to Grant Marciniak who had 13 points, South had a 22-13 point lead at that point. In
the second quarter South continued their hot shooting, and pressure defense. Everyone got
into the game and did their job, halftime score 44-29. In the 3rd quarter South continued
their pressure defense, Palmer brought in one of their Varsity players who played in each quarter
of the next game, he provided a spark for their offense, but the wolverines were there to
extinguish it before it became a fire. South extended their lead by 3 points in the quarter,
67-49. In the 4th quarter, like the last couple games, our competition comes out firing up 3
pointers and they make a good percentage of them. Assistant JV coach Butcher said it best
after the game, “you guys have to remember that the other team is doing what we want them to do,
they are shooting 3 pointers because that is the only what that they can get back into the
game. We want them to shoot those shots. Unfortunately, they made a good percentage of
them.” The 4th quarter was exciting for basketball fans no matter which team you were
rooting for. Even though South had a couple key players on the bench, there was little that
they could have done had they been in the game. Palmer’s Shooter was just on fire, hitting
3’s 4 feet behind the arc, at one point hitting a shot with David Alston in his face, like the
paparazzi on Justin Bieber. It didn’t matter where this guy was, or who was on him… he was
going to shoot it and it was going in. He finished with a season and lifetime high 39 points…
but it was not enough to take down the Wolverines. The most exciting play happened with 1.9
seconds left, Jack Hobbs at the free throw line South up by 2 points. Jack misses the first
one and then misses the second one, but the ball comes right back to him… So you would think that
he would grab it, but before anybody could grab it the referee calls a timeout??? So, Palmer takes
the ball out of bounds with 1.9 seconds left throws it all the way down the court, Alston (being a
good safety, tips the ball away from the intended target, but it goes right to one of their 3 point
shooters and with .3 seconds left he puts up the shot… unfortunately for Palmer a gust of wind in
the gym knocks the ball short of its intended target… game over. Game highlights: Four
players for South were in double figures; Marciniak lead the way with 18 points Alston had 13 and
the twin towers Louis Page and Ezra Afualo had 10 points. Page dominated the boards with 10
rebounds 9 of which helped start fast breaks and Enrique Morgan assisted 4 baskets.
2/11/11 - South 73 - West 82 South suffered their first
conference loss Tuesday night. The game was an intense 32 minute battle. South and West
both played well in the first quarter, trading baskets down the floor each time. South came
out in a zone defense forcing the eagles to score from the outside and the wolverines broke the
press and scored at will, 1st quarter score 20-20. In the second quarter, South continued
their great zone defense and through some rebounds and steals the wolverines stretched their lead
to 13 points at half time 50-37. The 3rd quarter saw west climb back into the game off some
great shooting. South played good defense, but the eagles made contested shots from long
range and ended the quarter with a 3 point lead. The 4th quarter was a tough physical
quarter, the referees let a lot of things go on both sides of the ball, bodies flying all over the
place and people diving on the floor made for an exciting final quarter. South battled back
getting west's lead down to 2 points with 2 minuets left... but west's great shooting helped secure
the victory for the eagles. Game notes: David Alston scored a team high 19 points, James
Lorec recorded the teams first double double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Zach
Lujan had 3 assists. Game notes: West shot 65% from 3 point range and 50 % from the field
hats off to their good shooting.
2/8/11 - South 54 - Chugiak 50 South finished the sweep of the Chugiak Basketball
program on Tuesday night with a 54-50. In the first quarter the Wolverines came out shooting,
but unfortunately not making. Turnovers and sloppy defense left South with a 1 point deficit
after the first quarter. In the second the wolverines took the lead through tough defense and
good shooting. Good transitioning and a couple of Timely 3 pointers by Jack Hobbs and Ezra
Afualo helped the wolverines push their lead to 8 points at half time 33-25. In the 3rd
quarter the mustangs came out with a zone defense that made South work the ball around for their
shots. Good rebounding and second chance opportunities helped South maintain their 7 point
lead going into the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter the wolverines used good ball movement to
keep the ball out of Chugiak’s hands. The game heated up in the last 2 minutes when South
with a 10 point gave up a couple shots to Chugiak bringing them with-in 6 points. Then
Chugiak used their fouls to take minimal time off the clock and make South hit their free
throws. Their plan worked with south missing from the charity stripe, eventually pulling
with-in 3 points. The game was over when Zack Lujan hit a free throw with 4 seconds left
pushing the lead to 4 points. The wolverines were lead by 4 different players each scoring 10
points; James Lorec, David Alston, Grant Marciniak, and Afualo.
2/2/11 South 75 Dimond 65 South avenged a 20 point loss last week with a dominating 10
point win Wednesday night. South got off to a good start with James Lorec hitting multiple 3
pointers within the first 2 minutes of the game. South used dominating defense to hold Dimond
to one shot possessions and dominated on the glass. Maintaining high intensity the Wolverines
pushed the lead to 20 points at half time. In the second half South maintained their 20 point
advantage in the 3rd quarter withstanding Dimond’s pressure defense and the couple runs that they
made. In the 4th quarter Dimond made some 3 point shots, forcing the wolverines to come out
of their zone defense, but the wolverines wouldn’t be stopped. Passing through the full court
pressure enabled South to get easy buckets and clutch free throw shooting secured the victory for
the Wolverines. Game highlights: James Lorec led the way with 16 points, David Alston and
Jack Hobbs each had 8 rebounds apiece, Zach Lujan had 7 assists, and Enrique Morgan had 4
steals. Game notes: James Lorec got called twice for an inbounding violation.
1/27/11 South 40 - Dimond 61 Last week was tough for the Wolverines, having played 4
games in 4 days. A day after beating one of their Southside rivals the wolverines took
on unbeaten Dimond in the first round of the West JV tournament. Dimond came to play, looking
hungrier then South. After an abysmal 1st quarter where nothing could seem to go right for
the wolverines, South played the rest of the game even with the Lynx. Final score Dimond 61
South 40. Jack Hobbs paced south with 10 points and Ezra Afualo led the team with 6
boards.
1/28/11 - South 62 - Eagle River 41
In their second game against Eagle River, South used 8 different defenses in their 62- 41
win. The Wolverines used pressure defense and good transitions to out point the Wolves.
On the offensive side of the ball the wolverines worked the ball around ER’s zone defense taking
timely shots and penetrating when needed. Jarred Passetto and Enrique Morgan lead the team
with 10 points apiece and James Lorec grabbed a team high 6 boards.
1/29/11 - South 64 - East 62 In the 4th place game the Wolverines took on the T-Birds for
the 3rd time this season. East came to play, but South was right there to hold off the final
T-bird run to win the game 64-62. Again South tried out some different defenses, learning
things about their team that will be good during the last month of the season. James Lorec
lead the team with 14 points and 3 boards, Zack Lujan lead the team with 3 assists and Grant
Marciniak lead the team with 3 steals.
1/26/11 - South 61 Service 39 It was a South-side battle
on Wednesday night as the Wolverines visited Service. The
game started out sloppy with Service playing a zone and South not moving the ball very
well. The first quarter left Service with an early lead. In the second
quarter, the Wolverines took back the lead and never looked back, heading into the locker
room with a 2 point lead 21-19.
The second half belonged to South from the get-go. Pressure defense
from all the Wolverines helped South extend their lead. Every Wolverine that stepped out on
the court did their job. South doubled Service’s point total for the quarter 20-10 giving
them a 41-29 advantage. The forth quarter saw the same action, South pressuring Service
and doubling their point total.
Game highlights/facts: Louis Page back after the injury lead the team with 12 points and 4
fouls. David Alston and Grant Marciniak both had 7 rebounds. Grant and Zack Lujan
both had 3 assists, and Zack lead the team with 4 steals. This marked the first game
this year that South was unable to connect from downtown going 0-15 on the
night.
1/22/11 - South 51 East 39
East and south played for the second time this season on Hawaiian Saturday. South came out
with a season low, 10 players available to play. Lewis Page was out for hopefully the last
game following his mysterious injury. Brad Butcher was out with a knee injury stemming from a
dancing incident. And Jake Parrish was out after having open heart surgery… he should be back
and ready to play this week though. The game started a little slow because East played an
effective zone that kept South from establishing a low post presence. Tough defense kept East
from pulling away and the score was 9-10 after the first quarter. In the second quarter East
stayed with their zone, but South was able to gain the lead through transition points and out
hustling the T-birds. Halftime score South 26 East 20. The second Started off good for
South Zack Lujan got things started with a bucket and on the next possession Enrique Morgan nailed
a 3 point shot giving South an 11 point lead. But tough play from East cut South’s lead back
to 7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter saw East come out of their zone and play
man to man, but smart ball movement and good shots helped South maintain their lead. For the
quarter South and East both made only 2 field goals, the difference was South shot 10 free throws
and made each one of them while East could not get any good shots off. David Alston lead the
balanced shooting attack with 9 points. Jack Hobbs lead the team with 9 rebounds, including 5
offensive rebounds. Lujan, Morgan, Teddy Engel, and Dante Williams all had 2 assists a
piece. And Big man Grant Marciniak lead the team with 2 blocks. Stat of the game… South
Shot 81% from the free throw line for the entire game.
1/18/11 - South 84 Eagle River 66 South started out this week with a victory over the
Eagle River Wolves. Missing their leading scorer again (this time some sort of illness), the
wolverines charged out of the gate with pressure defense and transition points taking a 20-13 lead.
The second quarter was a fast passed, Phoenix Suns' type game, lots of offense and not much
defense. Although South had the lead at halftime the coaching staff knew they could do
better and that to win the game they needed to step their game up. Halftime score South
45 ER 31.
The 3rd and the 4th quarters were fast passed and sloppy, like the 2nd quarter a Phoenix Suns' type
game. The strong post presence of Ezra Afualo, Jake Parrish, and David Alston helped secure
the victory with the wolverines establishing their low post dominance over the wolves.
Game Highlights (or interesting facts):
-The Wolverines shot 45 free throws in the game, making 27 of them.
- One of the team captains air-balled a free throw… not James Lorec
- Jake Parrish was voted best dressed wolverine, dawning black slacks, Italian alligator black
shoes, a albino rattlesnake belt, and a pink dress shirt with white cuffs.
- Dante was the leading scorer with 18 points, Jack Hobbs lead the team with 6 boards, Zach Lujan had 6 assists,
and Teddy Engel had 4 steals.
- Every player on the team got in at least 11 minutes of playing time.
- 20 seconds before halftime the wolverines ran their last second shot play… where our guard
dribbles until 5 seconds left, passes to the wing (who doesn’t look like he wants the ball…planned)
then skips it to the corner, where James Lorec hits a buzzer beating 3 pointer. I have seen a
couple of teams use this play during March madness.
- Like the last game against ACS, everybody had scored except Mr. Nash. So we told him to go get the ball and wait until
they fouled him and shoot some free throws. Nash again was reluctant, but ultimately
the team got him the ball, and he got fouled. So it was all in his hands to get himself
in the scoring column. He steps to the line, definitely having some butterflies and
proceeds to shoot… it’s never a good thing to hear the shooter say, “oh man,” while the ball
is still in the air. We will say that the ball drew iron, but that would be pushing it,
rather the air passing between the ball and the rim made a sound. Looking over at his
coach for some encouragement, Teddy received the benches words of wisdom along with some
smiles to lighten the mood... He steps to the line for shot 2 and… nails it.
1/15/11 - South 64 ACS 46 The wolverines lead from start to end opening with a 10-0
run. With leading scorer Louis Page out because of an undisclosed injury (some say he injured
it at Varsity practice while others believe that it was the result of an inappropriate comment
directed at his girlfriend), the wolverines would have a new leading scorer for this game.
Many players stepped up and took the reins for different periods of the game. Coach Nerland
was subbing in and out players like he was angry at team manager and statistician Michael Wilson,
but Wilson was up to the task. All in all the first half ended with the Wolverines in full
command 29-16. At the half the Wolverines talked about composer and finishing the game out as
they knew they had ACS frustrated and undisciplined. ACS had a couple of players that were
giving cheap shots to their Wolverine opponents as well as running their mouths while being down by
more than 20 points. At every point Nerland would tell his players to control their emotions
and their actions, to do their talking with their GAME. With the game in hand the Wolverines
kept up the pressure on the defensive side and worked the ball around for good shots on the
offensive side. Near the end of the game the coaching staff realized that everybody had
scored… except Teddy Engel who had been a great point guard with 4 assists and 0 turnovers.
With 2 minutes left in the game assistant coach Cliff Butcher called Engel over and told him to
stop being so Selfless and start being more selfish. If you are open at half court put it up…
3 guys on you, not a problem. But Teddy being a total team player looked down and said Coach
Nerland would not like that, he’s the man. Stunned… Butcher sat down for the rest of the game
and did not speak. Jack Hobbs lead the wolverines with 20 points on mostly great hustle
plays. Grant Marciniak played like a guy who weighs over 120 pounds grabbing 9 boards.
And Engel (AKA. Nash) lead the team with his 4 assists.
1/12/11 - South 69 Bartlett 60 The wolverines got off to a slow start against the
Golden Bears. Turnovers and sloppy defense allowed the Bears to keep the game close, but
South still lead 30-27 at the half. In the second half the bears came out with good defense
and timely shots to surge to a 2 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. But, the 4th
quarter belonged to the wolverines. Coach Nerland, told the boys to look into their hearts
and ask themselves if this was how they wanted the game to end, with Bartlett beating them… The
team responded, quarter starters Zach Lujan, Enrique Morgan, Dante Williams, David Alston, and
Louis Page got things started with their tough defense and ball control. The wolverines
played like a seasoned varsity team, swarming the ball on the defensive side and taking good shots
on the offensive side shooting 65% for the quarter. All in all the quarter ended with the
wolverines outscoring the bears 23-12 for the quarter. South was lead by; Page’s 20 points,
Alston’s 6 rebounds and 3 blocks, Grant Marciniak’s 4 assists, and Morgan and Lujan’s 2 steals a
piece.
1/10/11 - South 80 East 69 Tough defense and rebounds helped the wolverines out of the
gate holding onto a 1 point lead at the end of the first quarter. And in the second quarter
with some timely 3 point shots by 4 different wolverines and out hustling the t-birds the South
wolverines held a 40-31 point lead a halftime. The second half belonged to the wolverines,
tough defense and rebounds helped South gain at one point a 20 point lead. The wolverines
were lead by Louis Page’s 31 points and 6 assists, Grant Marciniak had 3 steals and James Lorec had
3 blocks.
1/5/11 - South @ West South Anchorage Junior Varsity got
their regular season schedule going with an away game against West. The game started out a
little sloppy on both sides of the ball, but South picked up the defensive pressure and came away
with an 11 to 7 lead after 1 quarter.
In the second quarter, defensive fundamentals help the Wolverines extend
their lead. South was relentless on the defensive boards, boxing out at every
opportunity and helping on the weak side whenever needed. Going into the second half the
wolverines held a 34-20 lead.
In the second half the Wolverines held up the pressure on defense and
worked the ball around West's zone taking time off the clock, maintaining a lead of 15 going into
the 4th quarter.
Coach Nerland's grand strategy found success as the Wolverines worked
the ball around the defensive pressure and pounded the ball down low to Louis Page and David
Alston, finally dribbling out the clock over the last minute to secure the victory. Final
score 57 42.
Although everybody got into the game and contributed to the win,
highlights of the game included:
- A game high 22 points from Page scoring at will.
- An impressive swat on one of West's big guys by Teddy "Nash" Engle.
- David Alston making a circus shot coming through the lane.
- Zach Lujan playing well with pressure defense and smart plays on the offensive side
of the ball.
- And a tie for the most impressive play: 1) Enrique Morgan weaved through traffic and
put up an unbelievable triple pump shot releasing the ball underhand from his waist with only
millimeters between his feet and the ground. The ball must have gone 15 feet in the air and
swished through the hoop. 2) Dante Williams, with 4 seconds left on the clock, dribbled
to his right driving from half court... 3.2.1 and heaved up a contested fade away 3 pointer from
the bleachers and 2 seconds after the buzzer ended the shot swished through giving the Wolverines
the 15 point lead they maintained until the final buzzer sounded.
One final note: West High School finally invested in 2 new score
boards... replacing the relic, overhead, 4 sided, eyesore that had been scoring games since before
most South High parents were born.
12/18/10 South JV lost a heartbreaker to Chugiak for the tournament championiship
56-58. The Black and Gold took 2nd overall.
12/17/10 South JV came out strong taking
an early lead against Service Friday night with a hot hand from Grant Marciniak. South
continued to play strong defense with good team play. They protected the ball with
excellent rebounding on both offensive and defensive boards.
South held the lead from buzzer to buzzer. Half
time score was 32-13. Every player scored, led by Grant Marciniak with 18, (including 4 three
pointers), Brad Butcher at 11, and David Alston
at 9. Final score 69-45.
South JV plays for tournament
championship at 2:30 Saturday against Chugiak. Go
Wolverines!!
12/16/10 South JV opened the season with a win against Colony, 65-49.

2-16-10 - South 58- Bartlett 54 Big Mo
Jobareth celebrated his birthday, a day early, by scoring 19 points and the South
C team played four solid quarters to beat a much improved Bartlett team 58-54. Both teams came out shooting well
in a fast paced game that lead to a 16-16 tie in the first
quarter. The fast pace and good shooting continued for both teams with South
taking a 39-34 lead into the locker room. In the second half, South continued to
drive to the basket while Bartlett continued to try and shoot three pointers and
the Southsiders had more success with their game style to open up a nine
point lead after three quarters. Both teams played evenly in the fourth
quarter with Bartlett making up some ground but not enough as they fell short in
the end. Oliver Johnson and Roman Stephan added 10 points, Alec Valdez and Isaac
light scored 6 points and Court Parret added 5 points. South improved to 6-5 in
conference play and 10-9 overall. South plays a home game on Saturday against Eagle River at noon.
2/14/11 - South 50 - Service 53 The South C team was hoping
to get a split with Service, the first place team in the conference, but came up
short 53-50. South played great team defense and once again used a balanced scoring
attack to keep the game close, but Alec Valdez' s 3 point shot, that would have tied
the game, came a half of second late. South trailed 51-43 with five minutes left in the
game but used full court pressure to close the gap to 51-50 with one minute to go.
Service was able to hold the ball for the last minute as the South players were unable
to get the foul before Service scored for the 3 point lead with 7 seconds left in the
game. South chose not to take a timeout and pushed the ball up the court but couldn't
get the shot off before the buzzer. Isaac Light scored 13 points, Mo Jobareth scored 12
and Oliver Johnson and Roman Stephan each added 9 points. South dropped to

(Hop-Along) McAllen, Krish (Swish) Metha and Court (Smiley) Parret all got their first
starts of the season. Playing a strong 2-3 defense, while tickling the twine with a
couple of three point shots, one by Mehta and another by McAllen, along with a strong
put back basket by Parret, South finished the first quarter trailing 10-8. In the
second quarter, South applied full court pressure defense to open up a 30-16 lead at
halftime and they never looked back after that. Roman Stephan scored 9 points, Krish
Mehta added 8 points, and Mo Jobareth, Alec Valdez, and Travis Heyroth all added 7 points
to lead a balanced scoring attack.South improved it's conference record to 4-4 and their

2/3/11 South 59 - Chugiak 34
South used a strong full court press and strong rebounding to beat
Chugiak 59-34 in the opening game of the Service C tournament. Mo Jobareth had 16 rebounds
and Court Parret had 13 rebounds as South controlled the boards through out the game.
South's pressure defense forced several Chugiak turnovers and they were able to turn them
into easy scoring chances jumping out to a 36-18 lead at halftime. In the second half South
looked to put the game away with a strong third quarter and did just that by extending
their lead to 54-20 at the end of the third quarter. Alec Valdez led all scorers with 14
points, Oliver Johnson added 12 points and Roman Stephan scored 9 points as 10 of 11
players scored in the game. Tyler Robinson returned after a long layoff due to injury to
get his first point s of the year. South will play Service Friday night at 7:30 at Service
2-2-11 - South 56 - Dimond 15
The South C team used a full court press and 10 of 11 players scored in a total
team effort as South ran away from Dimond 56-15. South used their press to jump out to a 39-8
lead at halftime and then played an effect zone in the second half to hold the lead. South lost
one starter to injury and and got a scare with another before emptying their bench and letting
the bench play out the second half. Court Parret led all scorers with 9 points, Oliver Johnson
had 8 points. Zach McAllen,Alec Valdez, and Mo Jobareth scored 7 points in a balanced scoring
attack. South also had 42 rebounds with each player getting at least two rebounds in the game.
South improved to 3-4 in the conference and 5-6 overall. South plays Chugiak Thursday night in
the first game of the Service C tournament at 7:30.
1-26-11 South 37 - Service 52 The South C team started strong but once
again struggled offensively in the second and third quarter as Service pulled away for a 52- 37
win. South used a strong inside game and Mo Jobareth and Court Parret started out strong
scoring 12 of South's first 18 points. South scored a combined 11 points in the second and
third quarter to fall behind 43-23 and never challenged again. Mo Jobareth scored 12 points,
Isaac Light scored 5 points, and Alec Valdez,Court Parret, and Roman Stephan added 4 points
each.
1-22-11 South 53 - East 60 The South C team continues to
improve but didn't make enough shots when it counted as they lost to East 60-53. South was looking
to rebound from 62-38 loss to East just 10 days earlier but despite playing better on both ends of
the floor, East once again out shot the Southsiders and that turned out to be the difference. South
was able to pull within four points with two minutes to go but could get no closer as they
struggled offensively down the stretch. Isaac Light had 15 points, Oliver Johnson and Roman Stephan
had 11 points, and Mo Jobareth added 8 points.
