3/1/10

The South High JV Team kept their heads held high, kept their poise, and hustled until the final buzzer in a tough loss to cap off their season Monday night against the East High Thunderbirds.  Will Krolick led the Black and Gold with 11, Louis Page had 10, and Mike Wilson added 8 in the effort.

The night finished off a great year for the Wolverine JV.  It was an action packed year with many "nail-biters," some that went their way and some that didn't.  Over-all however, it was a rare game that the Wolverines weren't right there, fighting for the win as the last few minutes of the fourth quarter ticked away.  Over the course of the 2009-2010 campaign, the Junior Varsity gelled as a team, started taking care of the ball and minimizing turnovers, and put together a tough, high pressure, defense that forced many turnovers and fastbreak opportunities, especially late in games.  As the year progressed, their shooting came along, their passing improved markedly, and most importantly their ability to execute a team offense and team defense improved with every game, becoming a definite strength by the end of the season. The Wolverine Faithful are extremely proud of what this team has accomplished this year, and are looking forward to great things from these young men in the years to come.

2/26/10

The South High JV came out charging against the West Eagles Friday night.  Tough defense by Matt Liverance set the tone as the Wolverines stopped the Eagles offense and pushed it passed their press to take a 14-8 lead at the quarter.  Jared Pessetto came off the bench to spark the Black and Gold's offense, while Teddy Engel threaded the needle with outstanding assists and David Alston converted on several drives to the basket allowing them to hold their lead 28-26 going into the locker room at the half. The Eagles stepped up the pressure in the third quarter and forced several turnovers for easy buckets.  Combined with excellent foul shooting, West was able to take over the lead 42-35 by the end of the third.  Tough pressure by Grant Marciniak and Tanner Evans in the fourth turned out to be too little too late as the Wolverines fell to the Eagles 64-57.  David Alston led the Black and Gold with 13 points while Louis Page poured in 10 and Tanner Evans added 9.  Matt "The Enforcer" Liverance ripped 13 boards and a few blocked shots to lead the defensive effort.

2/22/10

The South High JV fought hard in a seesaw battle Monday night against ACS and came away with a win.  Both teams came to play, with the Lions leading at the half 29-26.  Even as the fourth quarter began, ACS held on to their lead by just one, but the Wolverines would not be denied.  The Black and Gold put on a full-court press that caused key turnovers while they took care of the ball themselves, posting a season low turnover count for the night.  The battle went down to the last few minutes when Will Krolick hit a three pointer and Grant Marciniak stole the inbounds pass and sunk a field goal to seal the game for South.  Consistant play from the entire team was the key as they took the win 60-49.  Grant Marciniak put forth an incredibly balanced effort, leading the Wolverines with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Tanner Evans and Louis Page contributed 8 points each and David Alston posted 5 rebounds.

2/11/10

The South High JV could not find the handle against the Palmer Moose on Thursday night.  The cold shooting generated only 15 points of offense in the first half and they trailed by 9. Grant Marciniak finally started to hit the mark in the third quarter, and the Black and Gold fought back to trail by only 4, 28-32 at the end of three.  The Wolverines implimented a full court man-to-man press in the fourth and generated several steals that turned into a few hard to come-by layups as South battled back to within 2 poins with just a few minutes left.  But in the end, the Moose sunk their free throws and dominated the boards and ended up winning 49-40.  Grant Marciniak had a banner night with 17 points and 5 rebounds for the Wolverines

2/9/10

The South High JV came out cold against the Service Cougars at home on Tuesday night. The Cougar full court press gave South fits early on, and Service rolled to an 18-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines started to break the press however in the second quarter.  They started looking up court and getting some nice transition baskets. Will Krolick got some key steals and South fought back to trail by only 5 at the half. Excellent foul shooting by Tanner Evans and Josh Crapps in the third quarter kept The Wolverines close, and Jay Mehte came off the bench to nail a crucial three pointer.  The Black and Gold would not go away, lurking just 5 points back until deep in the fourth quarter. A full court man-to-man press was the spark that forced turnovers and got South within 1 point with just over a minute to go.  Fast break points by James Lorec and steals by Grant Marciniak kept the game in reach until the very end.  The Cougars had some excellent foul shooting of their own down the stretch and were able to fight off the Wolverine charge and won the game 65-57.  Tanner Evans led South with 13 while Louis Page and Will Krolick added 8 a piece.

2/6/10

Pressure defense and rebounds kept the South High JV in the game amidst a poor shooting percentage in the first quarter against the Stars of Soldotna High.  The game was tied 11-11 at the end of one and remained a seesaw battle all the way to the final buzzer.  Matt Liverance dominated inside in the second quarter, blocking 3 shots and forcing turnovers with tough over-plays on the low post. The Wolverines ended the second down 25-28.  South came out patiently working their offense in the third, driving to the hoop and executing excellent bounce passes to their low posts.  Sparked by 2 crucial steals and a three pointer by Grant Marciniak they battled back to lead 41-39 at the end of 3.  The Black and Gold's outside shooting finally heated up in the fourth as James Lorec, Louis Page, and Will Krolick all hit from the perimeter as the defense stepped up the pressure. Grant Marciniak, with ice-water in his veins, stepped up with 20 seconds left, ahead by one, and knocked down both ends of a one and one to put South up by three.  Then just 10 seconds later Marciniak stole the ball and got fouled, nailing 2 more foul shots and putting the game out of reach, 58-53.  Louis Page led the Wolverines with 15 points, Grant Marciniak had 13 points and 4 steals, and Matt Liverance had 12 points.

2/5/10

The South High JV team stormed to an 11-3 lead Friday night against the Kenai Kardinals behind Josh Crapps' 6 points and 3 rebounds in the first 3 minutes of the game.  Although poor shooting in the second quarter allowed Kenai back in the game, several steals by Grant Marciniak and Teddy Engel kept the Kardinals offense down as well, both teams only scoring 5 and 4 points respectively in the second quarter.  The Wolverines hit the locker room up 19-4 at half.  Rebounding was the key in the second half as South came out roaring in the third quarter.  Josh Crapps, Louis Page, Matt Liverance, and Josh Piltz dominated the offensive and defensive glass, while controlled fast-break passing from Engel and Jay Mehta broke the game open... 38-16 at the end of the third.  Jared Pessetto and James Lorec kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter, forcing turnovers and ensuring the game stayed in the bag. Josh Crapps led the Black and Gold with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Louis Page added 10 points, James Lorec added 6, and Josh Piltz came away with 3.  A season high 44 team rebounds with a reasonable shooting percentage was the key to South's success on the road against the Kardinals.

2/3/10

The South High JV gave it their all against the East High Thunderbirds at home Wednesday night, but came up short. The Wolverines came out aggressively on defense with Louis Page picking up the defensive boards and Josh Crapps providing solid offensive low post play. Wolverine turnovers caused them to slide to as much as 12 back in the second quarter, but scrappy play by Grant Marciniak and made shots by Page allowed them to battle back to just a 32-30 deficit at half time. East's full-court pressure finally got to South in the third quarter though, and coupled with many, many missed shots they slipped to 13 down by the end of the third. South never laid down though, battling back to within 10 points in the fourth before ending up on the losing end of the 70-48 score. Louis Page led the black and gold with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Josh Crapps had 8 points and 9 rebounds.  James Lorec and Will Krolick rounded out the scoring with 10 and 7 points respectively. Teddy Engel, Jared Pessetto, and Jay Mehta also turned in great hustling play off the bench for the Wolverines while Matt Liverance provided a spirited defensive performance.

2/1/10
The South High JV team came to play on Monday night against the West Eagles, never giving up 'till the final buzzer. The Wolverines executed their motion offensive with crisp transition passes in the first quarter, trailing only 19-14 at the end of the first quarter. However, excellent shooting by the Eagles and some sloppy passing by South allowed West to stretch their lead to 10 by the end of the first half. The black and gold fought back though, Will Krolick kept the pressure on with steals and slashing drives to the hoop.  Tough defense at the top of the key by Teddy Engel stopped any momentum West tried to generate while Louis Page grabbed rebound after rebound. Consistant shooting down the stretch by Josh Crapps and James Lorec got South within 4 points with only a few minutes left. But in the end, the Eagles sustained their lead through good foul shooting and positive control of the ball, winning the game 74-67.  Louis Page led all scorers with 21 points and James Crapps had 12 while Will Krolick and David Alston added 8 a piece.

1/29/10

The South High JV showed up to play as they led from wire to wire in their game against Chugiak on Friday. The Wolverine's intense pressure defense forced turnover after turnover in the first half while they attacked the basket on the offensive end of the court. Tanner Evans and James Lorec spurred the high pressure play and the entire team shot an incredible 19 for 20 from the free throw line in the first half. The Mustangs wouldn't let down though, and kept the score within 5 points most of the second half.  Some clutch offensive rebounds from Louis Page and Josh Crapps kept the 'Stangs at bay into the fourth quarter while David Alston, Will Krolick, and Grant Marciniak did a great job running time off the clock and sustaining the lead to win 67-62. Louis Page had his second double-double of the season for the gold and black scoring 25 points from all over the court and grabbing 12 rebounds. James Lorec added 12 and Grant Marciniak and David Alston contributed 7 each.1/28/10
A tough shooting night left the South High JV wanting against the Eagle River Wolves in the first game of the West JV tournament. The Wolverines started out slow, scoring only 4 points in the first quarter. They fought back to within 3 points of the lead early in the third before the Wolves caught fire from the three-point line.  The gold and black eventually dropped to a twenty point deficit by the end of the game.  Louis Page led the Woverines with 10 points, David Alston added 9, and Josh Crapps had 6. Jared Pessetto, Teddy Engel, and Josh Piltz also had strong outings, playing hard and adding a bucket each to the effort.

1/27/10

The South High JV put out a solid effort in Chugiak Wednesday night, minimizing their turnovers and shooting 71% from the free-throw line.  South got a slow start, but battled back to within 4 points with good offensive rebound put-backs from Grant Marciniak and Jay Mehte.  The Wolverines utilized their posts in the second quarter and Josh Crapps and Louis Page took advantage with some solid scoring from both high and low posts. Down by only 2 points at half, South came out with excellent half-court defense and generated timely steals, taking the lead for the first time with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. After leading 47-41, the Wolverine offense went cold in the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs hit some crucial shots down the stretch and got the lead back with just two minutes left.  Sitting on their lead, Chugiak made their free-throws and won 58-51.  Louis Page led the gold and black with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Will Krolick had 11 and both David Alston and Grant Marciniak each added 7 points. Joe Trull led the Mustangs with 13.

1/19/10
The South High JV had their hands full Tuesday night at home against Bartlett.  They came out strong with tough pressure defense and ended the first quarter down just 1 point, 14-13.  But the second quarter got away from them as Bartlett stretched their lead to 45-23 at the half.  The Wolverines hustled hard in the second half but just couldn't close the gap, and lost 88-40.  Hard, hustling play by Tanner Evans and Matt Liverance netted South 5 steals, while Matt added 2 blocked shots and 6 rebounds as well.  Louis Page again led the black and gold with 10 points, WIll Krolick added 8, and Josh Crapps had 7 points.

1/16/10

South 61 Eagle River 47
The South JV was solidly in control in Saturday night's game against the Eagle River Wolves, leading from wire to wire.  Great penetrating drives by Tanner Evans shredded the defense and opened up shooting lanes for Louis Page, while some great foul shooting by Mike Wilson helped the Wolverines lead 13-10 at the end of the first quarter.  Pressure defense kept the Wolves at bay as Matt Liverance had some key blocks and Josh Crapps had some excellent rebounds.  South's patience on offense enabled them to stretch their lead to 30-20 at half.  Will Krolick came out scoring and the Wolverines were able to take care of the ball with less turnovers in the third quarter which sustained their lead in double digits.  The Wolves made a run with 5 minutes left in the game, hitting some key three pointers.  But pressure defense and good transition play by the Wolverines stopped the charge and South went on to win with a season high 61 points.  Louis Page led the black and gold with 15 points and Tanner Evans had 12 while Will Krolick and Mike Wilson each had 9.

1/13/10
Some tough basket play by Matt Liverance, Louis Page, and Josh Crapps kept the Southside JV in the game during a sloppy first quarter that left them down only 2, 12-10.  Tough, scrappy transition play characterized the second quarter as a 3 pointer by Will Krolick and a key 2 pointer by James Lorec spurred the Wolverines to keep that 2 point deficit going into the locker room at halftime 25-23.  However, a wild back-and-forth third quarter wore South down and other than a three pointer by David Alston, the lid just stayed on the hoop.  A total of 17 fouls in the third quarter coupled with good foul shooting by the Cougars allowed Service to stretch their lead 44-31. The Wolverines never gave up and continued pressure defense right to the end as Patrick Enslow drained a 3 and Mike Wilson made good on his free throws.  But in the end, the gap was too great and they lost 58-45.  Will Krolick and James Lorec led South with 7 points each, while Louise Page and David Alston added 6 and 5 points respectively.  Trevor Howe lead all scorers for the Cougars with 18.

1/8/10
Turnovers against the Dimond Lynx pressure defense kept the Wolverines at bay in the first quarter at Dimond Friday night. But some inspired play by Jerrod Cossaboom and key shots by Matt Liverance and Louis Page got them back in the game as they battled back to only a 22-19 halftime deficit.  Solid passing by the Lynx stretched their lead to 38-25 by the end of the third quarter, but a string of three pointers by James Lorec got South back within 5 points and kept the game within reach. But even with incredible hustling defense by Will Krolick and Mike Wilson keeping them within 10 points, in the end they couldn't overcome Dimond's lead and lost the game 54-41.  Louis Page led all scorers with 11, while James Lorec had 9 and Matt Liverance added 7 for the Wolverines.  Noriell Hernandez led the Lynx with 10.

12/12/09

The Wolverine JV came out of the gate slow, but finished strong for the win. They trailed most of the first half as Grace shot well from the foul line and capitalized on South's prolific first-half fouling.  But tenacious defense in the second half caused multiple steals and a 52-39 third quarter lead. They kept up the pressure defense throughout the fourth quarter and won the game 66-48.  Jared Cossaboom, Will Krolick, and Louis Page led the Wolverines with 11 points each while Grace's Bradley Boerger led all scorers with 12.

3/1/10

The South C team played a strong game against a short handed East team but fell short 61-60 in their final game of the season. East, playing with only seven players, played solid defense and shot the ball well to beat South for the third time this season. South pressed the whole game and kept up a fast pace, using all thirteen players, but East had enough in the tank to hold on. The South C team played solid in all their games this year having the lead in the fourth quarter in six of it's nine losses and losing five of their games by five points or less. The all freshman team got their first taste of high school basketball and learned a lot from the experience. After the game in the locker room, despite the loss, the boys all talked about how much they enjoyed their first season and how much fun they had as teammates. All the boys are looking forward to their sophomore season.Coach Butcher, Coach Dyson, and Coach Heyroth were very proud of the effort and improvement of all the boys on the team and look forward to watching them in the future.

2/26/10

The South C team used agressive offense and solid defense to win their final home game of the season beating West 58-50. South used a balanced scoring attack and did one of it's best rebounding jobs of the season allowing West very few "second shots". Tenacity and tough play, however, held them off, and South stayed up by ten for half-time.  The second half opened with the Kardinals coming back with strong play from their 6'5" center, but Connor Deitz stepped in and got a few key defensive stops to take the wind out of the Kardinal sail.  Excellent high post play from Jack Hobbs and Isaac spread the defense and kept the Wolverine lead 33-28 at the end of the third.  South switched to a zone to start the fourth, and scrappy play by Williams made sure that Kenai never got back in the game.  Jacob Parish and Deitz did a commendable job limiting the damage done by Kenai's 6'5" big man.  Williams led all scorers with 22 while Jacob Parish added 7 and Lujan and Hobbs each had 4.  The big man, Shane S., led the Kards with 17.
