2/26/11 South 84 - Chugiak
68 The Wolverines came to play at Chugiak on Saturday night for the
last game of the regular season. South locked down the inside from the get-go as Tommy Hobbs,
Logan McGinnis, and Mitch Bustamante stopped everything that came into the paint. Almost all
of the Mustang's early points came either from the three point line or the foul line. The
Mustangs for their part came out with an aggressive double-teaming defense that South initially had
a tough time with. The Wolverines, through excellent team play, were able to mount a balanced
scoring attack, getting points from 6 different players in the first quarter.
Matt Liverance ripped the boards and added a few points as well after
McGinnis got his third foul and earned himself some bench time. Tommy Walker started to
create some offense in the second quarter, driving the lane and dishing it off, which he would do
expertly for the rest of the night. The Wolverines battled to a 2 point half-time lead,
37-35.
South charged out of the locker room and put together their best third
quarter of the year. Excellent defensive pressure by TJ McKinney and David Bullock forced the
Mustangs to turn the ball over, and the Wolverines capitalized with good transition play.
McKinney and Walker continued to pour in the points from outside, and Hobbs put an exclamation on
it with a flying thunder dunk slicing from the left side of the rim to jam it home. Hobbs
led South with 25 points, while Walker added 19 and McKinney chipped in 12.
The Black and Gold ended their season on a high note... playing excellent
team ball and doing all the little things right: they hit their foul shots, got offensive
rebounds, got hand in the passing lanes, dove on the floor, and passed the ball. Truly a team
effort, with everyone contributing, the Wolverines earned themselves some well-deserved momentum
heading into Regions. They face Dimond on Thursday night at West in the first game of the
Cook Inlet Conference Tournament.
2/18/11 South 73 - Eagle River
67 The South Anchorage High Wolverines took on the Eagle
River Wolves Friday night and battled to a comfortable 10-point victory. South began the game
a bit over-aggressive on defense, with 6 fouls in the first quarter. However, they instituted
a balanced scoring attack with 6 players scoring in the first quarter. Max Edlund came off
the bench to spark the Wolverines and comae through with 6 points right off the bat.
Eagle River shot better in the second quarter, and due to some sloppy play
by the Wolverines, the Wolves battled back into the game to only trail South by 6 at half,
33-27.
The Black and Gold came out in the third quarter finally owning the
boards. Kyle Weir, Tommy Hobbs, and Mitch Bustamante grabbed rebounds at will, successfully
keeping Eagle River to just one shot attempt. David Bullock and TJ McKinney kept taking it
strong to the hoop, as well as Tommy Walker trying to create points off the drive. The
Wolverines were able to maintain a 10 point lead most of the rest of the way.
A solid outing by South, coming through with a reasonable shooting
percentage and causing turnovers on defense. Besides a little bit of sloppy play, the
Wolverines put together a nice game plan and finished up 73-67. McKinney, Hobbs and
Walker shared the scoring honors for South with 14,15 and 16 points respectively.
2/15/11 - South 57 - Bartlett
68 The Black and Gold came to play on their Senior Night against
the Bartlett Bears on Tuesday, giving the fans an exciting game to the end. David Bullock
took over this game for South, ending the game with 18 points, several steals, and a handful of
rebounds. After leading by three at half time however, the Wolverines let the game slowly
slip away. Excellent hustle on defense and a frantic pace on offense kept the Bears on their
heels, but two crucial turnovers with just a minute left drove them into a hole and South just
couldn't claw its way back into the lead. The Wolverine Seniors gave it their all for the
last time on their home court, and let the record show that South's win-loss percentage in no way
reflects the effort and hard work these young men put in this year:
#3 TJ McKinney - The Bomber. The purest 3 point shooter on the
squad, TJ could bomb from waaaay outside that three point line and had a darn
good completion percentage to boot. Definitely a hustler on defense, TJ loved
to anticipate the steal, then get all four limbs a-flyin' as he drove from coast to coast
with solid finishes. Although he only drew one 3-shot foul all year, there seemed
to be a magical force that threw him sliding back on his behind after releasing that
three more often than not.
#5 David Bullock - Mr. Solid-State. David was always
there, bringing the ball up without alot of fanfare, getting the offense going, and making the
occasional three. He really earned his keep on the defensive side, causing all types of
havok in the opponent's backcourt. David has that sixth sense for getting his
hand out at just the right time and causing that turnover or steal. Nothing
fazed Mr. Solid-State.
#11 Tommy Walker - The Creator. Tommy Walker just makes
things happen. Dribbling up the court with his patented low-dribble, almost
taunting the poor defender to try and take it, Tommy drives, cuts, and finesses his way
to the hoop. Weaving through all five defenders, somehow he makes it to the hoop, and
pulls up with an un-believable soft touch for two points.
#15 Logan McGinnis - The Pounder. Logan is about 4 feet shorter than
any other forward or center in the league, and for my money I wouldn't want anyone else in the
paint for my team. Logan pounded on defense, punishing anyone that dared come inside, and
then he would pound on offense. Logan posted up like a 7-footer, turned, and somehow got that
shot up through the trees on the right side of the hoop. South should bronze the spot on the
right side of basket and emblazon number 15 on it.
#21 Max Edlund - The Slasher. If the team needed a spark off the bench,
they turned to Max. His electrifying play brought the house to their feet everytime. He
forced turnovers on defense, and slashed to the hoop, with or without the ball, on offense, often
giving his teammates a beautiful target and making them look brilliant for such a great pass and
easy layup. Max has two speeds... off and full throttle, he doesn't know how to not give
110%.
#23 Jared Cossaboom. Mr. Dependable (a.k.a. Mr. Serious). Jared is
one of those no-nonsense players that simply gets the job done. Whether it's bringing the
ball up the court, getting a defensive stop, or nailing an important jumper, Jared will get it
done. No pomp and circumstance for Mr. Dependable (a.k.a. Mr. Serious), he just gets it done
with nary a smile on his face.
#33 Kyle Weir - Mr. Blue Collar. Kyle has done nothing
more all year than put his nose to the grindstone and work. Every minute he gets
in, he busts his tail up and down the court, getting rebounds, posting up, and
stopping the opposing big men from getting to the hoop. Solid passing, tough
defense, and no complaining are Kyle's trademarks.
#34 Tommy Hobbs - Red Thunder. No one on the team has brought the
crowd to its feet more often than Tommy Hobbs. Whether it was humiliating the opposing team
with an in-your-face, out-of-my-kitchen rejection, or a thunderous, out-of-nowhere monster dunk,
Tommy thrilled the Wolverine faithful routinely.
#42 Matt Liverance - The Enforcer. Pity the foolish
offender who tried coming into the paint with Matt in the game. Matt's tough play,
extreme hustle, and unwaivering committment to his team make him a vital part of the Wolverines,
grabbing boards, checking opponents, and wreaking havok on the inside.
#45 Mitch Bustamante - Mr. Basic. South's soccer player turned
hooper, Mitch was quick on the uptake. Every week his skills increased and his hoop knowledge
grew and he became more and more valuable to the team. Mitch hustled, boxed out, set picks,
and did all the little things right as the season progressed. Focussed on the basics, Mitch has
become a solid, contributing member of the Black and Gold.
The Wolverine fans thank the 2011 seniors for a great year and many
exciting games on the home hardwood. Good luck in regions and beyond!
2/12/11 - South 68 - Palmer
56 The South High Wolverines had to travel all the way to Palmer to
find their offense again on Saturday night. The Wolverines worked through their
offenseive sets, moving the ball well, and spreading the scoring across the team. Solid
shooting by Tommy Walker, Logan McGinnis, Max Edlund, TJ Mckinney, and Matt Liverance
jumpstarted their game in the first half. Attacking the basket was the key to creating
offense as Walker, McKinney, and Edlund shredded the Moose zone for lay-ups or dishes for easy
jumpshots. Palmer was tough on the offensive glass in the first half however, keeping
the game within a few points at the half.
South kept the pressure on in the second half, pushing the ball up
the floor, and rotating their defense between man-to-man, 2-3 zone, and a full-court zone
trap. David Bullock continues to impress on defense, always getting hands in the passing
lanes and causing havock in the backcourt. Tommy Walker kept pressure on the Moose defense by
pusing the ball into the paint, and Tommy Hobbs worked well on the post as he turned and drove
the lane himself. Kyle Weir put in a great perfomance on the boards and Logan McGinnis
actually made it to the end of the game without 5 fouls. The Black and Gold steamed ahead in
the fourth quarter and won 68-56.
2/11/11 - South 50 - East
65 South High got off to a cooooooold start on Friday night against
the East Thunderbirds at home. The T-birds 2-3 zone kept the Wolverines out of the paint and
their cold shooting put a stop to their offense. Max "The Slasher" Edlund however provided
the 1st quarter spark with his signature slash to the hoop for a layup, finally kicking South into
gear.
After only 5 points in the first quarter, the Wolverines started to heat
up as Logan McGinnis pounded away inside getting boards and put-backs for points. David
Bullock sparked the defense with several tips and steals as the Wolverines fought back to a three
point deficit going into half, 25-28.
A slow start hampered South's comeback in the third quarter, but more
hustle by Bullock and some play-making by Tommy Walker off the drive created several lay-ups,
but just enough to keep the spread 37-41 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter kept the same story, lots of hustle on defense, steals
and hard work.... but no one could turn those into offense. They fought back to within 7
points with 1 minute left with shots by Kyle Weir and Tommy Walker. But in the end the Black
and Gold couldn't overcome a cold night on offense and lost 50-65.
2/9/11 - South 44 - West 70
2/7/11 South 56 Chugiak
53 The South High Wolverines took on a tough Chugiak Mustang squad
on their home floor Monday night. The Wolverines played solid defense in an even first
quarter that ended in a 16-16 tie. Three pointers from David Bullock and TJ Mckinney provided
the offensive spark, as well as slashing cuts by Max Edlund off the bench. South went cold in
the second quarter, with Logan McGinnis taking a feed from Bullock for a layup to break a 4 minute
drought. The Mustangs were able to get several second shots and worked their way to a 3 point
lead at half, 27-30.
In a back and forth third quarter, both teams worked hard on their
pressure defense. The Wolverines were able to force turnovers, and Tommy Hobbs drilled a
three pointer to put South up 44-41 at the end of 3.
The Black and Gold kept their composure through the fourth quarter, even
as the lead bounced back and forth between the two teams. Slashing cuts by McKinney and
threes from Hobbs kept the Wolverines in the lead by 1 with just a minute to go. Bullock took
the ball on a nerve-racking, 20-second, Curly Neal-style dribble off, and managed to keep
control and get away from the defense. McKinney finally got fouled and with ice in his veins,
nailed both free throws to get South up by three. With 4.3 seconds left to get a shot off,
the Mustangs were unable to get past the Wolverine defense and the Black and Gold got the
win.
2/4/11 South 47 Dimond 60 The
Wolverines took their home floor in a rematch of a game they played just 3 days before against the
Dimond High School Lynx. South was hoping to use the extra minutes and extend their come from
behind efforts from the previous night, and early on it looked like they did just that. The
Wolverines came out with tenacious defense, Tommy Hobbs was bodying up on the Lynx Rydin Hines and
keeping him from getting anything in the paint. On the other side of the lane, Logan McGinnis
banged away and as usual picked up several post points against a much larger Dimond front line.
David Bullock created havok on the perimeter, picking off passes and harrassing the Lynx
guards. The home team spread the scoring as well with 5 different players contributing early
on. South looked dominant with a 16-9 lead at the end of the first.
The Lynx tried their extended half-court trapping defense in the second
quarter, but South kept their composure. Tommy Walker controlled the tempo of the game very
well, creating offense and generating points off the dribble. South's 2-3 zone once again had
the Lynx stumped as the Wolverines extended on the perimeter and forced several turnovers.
Dimond whittled away at the lead though, behind Dylan Lauwers' three point shooting, and went to
the locker room with only a point between them, South 25, Dimond 24.
The third quarter has been South's nemesis this year, and this game proved
to follow the same pattern. Dimond's constant harrassment on the perimeter began to force
some South turnovers while the Wolverine offense went cold. The Black and Gold never gave up,
and hung between 3 and 7 points down all the way through the second half. They made an
excellent defensive run with a few minutes to go, stealing several balls in the backcourt right
underneath Dimond's hoops, but just couldn't convert those to points. And in the end,
South's lack of offense just couldn't overcome the defecit and Dimond pulled away 60-47. Max
Edlund and Kyle Weir provided an excellent spark off the bench for South, Tommy Walker led the
scoring with 14 points and Tommy Hobbs had 8
2/2/11 South 55, Dimond
60 Tommy Hobbs came from out of nowhere to soar above the hoop
and jam home a ball that had bounced harmlessly straight above the rim. The thunder dunk woke
up the crowd and more importantly the South High Wolverines who had fallen into an unproductive
offensive slump in the second half of their game against the Dimond Lynx Tuesday night.
Later, Hobbs would followed up with a three pointer, several steals, and David Bullock added a
long range three to get the Wolverines within 3 points with only a minute to go.
The game began as a defensive battle, both teams playing very physical and
forcing the opposing team to earn every point. Logan McGinnis banged away at a much taller
Dimond front line, intimidating them from the get-go. Tommy Walker led South in the first
half with a soft touch on medium-range shots and floaters in the lane. South's 2-3 zone
seemed to stump the Lynx as they moved the ball around the perimeter but were unable to penetrate
or get it into their top weapon, center Rydin Hines. The Wolverines were unable to take
advantage however as they stayed cold from the perimeter as well. Jared Cossaboom, TJ
McKinney, and David Bullock did a good job handling the ball and avoiding an aggressive 1/2 court
trap put on by the Lynx. Dimond led by just 2 at the half, 20-18.
The opening of the third quarter belonged to the Lynx, and proved to be
the deciding minutes of this ball game. A series of turnovers led to quick transition baskets
and Dimond jumped out to a 32-18 lead in just the first few minutes of the second half. South
never gave up and continued to fight, closing out the third down 38-27.
The fourth quarter was a frantic paced game with the Black and Gold
pressing, and the Lynx trying to slow the pace. Max Edlund led a fresh squad in the
middle of the fourth that seemed to spark the Wolverines. Edlund had several steals and
converted those to points along with tough inside man McGinnis. South forced a
string of double digit turnovers, scoring over 25 points in the fourth quarter as they hustled,
slashed, and banged their way back into the game. Dimond held their poise, converting on
missed assignments by the Wolverine's press, and most importantly hitting their free-throws down
the stretch. South closed it down to a one posession game with a minute to go, but couldn't
knock down the all-important three in the closing seconds.
Tommy Hobbs led all scorers with 22 points, and Tommy Walker added 12 for
the Wolverines. Dylan Lauwers and Rydin Hines led the Lynx with 18
each.
1/25/11 - Service 66, South 60 Service
withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally Tuesday, hanging on for a 66-60 win over South in a CIC
boys basketball game at South.
Service's Adam Klie led all scorers with 30 points and pulled down 11
rebounds. Amu Aukusitino pitched in 18 points for the Cougars, who led by 19 at halftime.
Service cooled off down the stretch, only hitting one field goal in the
final quarter. That's when South, led by Tommy Walker's 18 points and T.J. McKinney's 14 points,
starting heating up. The Wolverines outscored the Cougars 22-10 in the fourth quarter.
1/19/11 The South Wolverines showed up Wednesday night
against Eagle River in front of their home crowd with the one aspect of their game that has
been missing; defense. They charged to a 9-0 lead behind a tough zone press;
trapping the inbounds pass, stealing the ball, and converting those steals to points. Tommy
Hobbs, TJ McKinney, and Tommy Walker rained down threes allowing the starting five to
take a break after gathering a 19-8 lead. Matt Liverance, Kyle Weir, Max Edlund, Jerod
Cossaboom, and Tanner Evans took over and held their own against the
Wolves starters. After one quarter South had built themselves a 24-17 lead.
Tommy Walker was Mr. Hustle in the second quarter, stealing balls in
the backcourt, diving for loose balls, and driving the lane at will against the
visiting Wolves. Max Edlund took over half-way through, flying through the
air, throwing his body into harm's way, and sinking his running floaters. With Enrique Morgan
taking the court at the 2 minutes mark, every member of the Black and Gold saw playing
time in the first half. At half-time the Wolverines scored a solid 50 points, but more
importantly, had held Eagle River to 30.
The third quarter was much the same, Edlund and Walker busting up the
Wolves' front court, Hobbs and McGinnis ruling the boards, and David Bullock and Jerod Cossaboom
calmly setting up the offense. When the fourth quarter rolled around, Zach Lujan, Tanner
Evans, Matt Liverance, Kyle Weir, and Enrique Morgan saw some serious minutes... doing their own
damage and keeping the pressure on. Weir and Liverance posted up solidly in the lane, Weir
delivering a nice jump hook while Liverance pounded in on the baseline. Morgan slashed and
cut, attempting a double-pump woopty-doo in the lane that didn't fall, but getting the final 2
points to finish up the win 90-57. Hobbs led all scorers with 23 points while Walker added 21 and
Edlund floated in 10. In a solid team effort, every Wolverine except one
scored.1/15/11 SAHS went into the Lion's den at the Anchorage
Christian School and found themselves in for a 32 minute battle. TJ McKinney
and Tommy Hobbs started the game big, hitting three pointers to drive the Wolverine score
up fast. ACS answered quickly though, pushing the ball up the court and converting on the
transition offense. Kyle Weir added four points and several boards to keep the game tied at
23 at the end of one quarter.
David Bullock lead an improved defense in the second quarter and
the Wolverines were able to force several turnovers. Tommy Walker brought his transition
game to South's offense and edged out a lead going into halftime, 50-44.
The Lions came out quick in the third quarter, adding solid perimeter
shooting to their up-tempo fastbreaking game as they clawed their way back to a one point
game. Logan McGinnis continually banged on the boards, putting several back in for points as
Tommy Hobbs rained in a few more of his 5 three pointers on the day. Tough, hard-nosed play
held ACS at bay, and the Black and Gold held on to a tenuous 1 point lead, 66-65.
The Wolverines, who had been relying on excellent three point shooting all
game, went cold at the beginning of the fourth. The Lions kept up their relentless fastbreak
attack and forced an 8 point lead with three minutes left. South never gave up, battling
every second of the last two minutes, and despite a heroic defensive effort they couldn't convert
on the offensive end and dropped the game 95-84. Wes Arnes led all scorers with 27, Tommy
Hobbs led south with 25 and Tommy Walker added 21.
1/11/11 The South High Wolverines took to the road against
the Bartlett Bears Tuesday night and came away wanting. The Bears seemingly could not miss as
they stormed to a 15-0 lead. The Wolverines battled back to keep themselves in the game, but
faltered half way throught the second quarter, falling behind 48-19 at the half.
The second half continued the one-sided romp as the Black and Gold
couldn't right the ship. Bartlett ended with an 81-60 win. Tommy Walker debuted for
South and was able to get in 20 points while David Bullock had a good shooting game and added
13.
1/8/11 - South @ East South lead from wire to wire on
Saturday night as they avenged a close loss earlier in the season and took a win from the East High
Thunderbirds in the T-birds own house. The Wolverines heated up early behind solid shooting
from Tommy Hobbs and TJ McKinney while Logan McGinnis simply pounded the boards on both ends
of the floor. The key, however, was ball control. David Bullock and Jerod Cossaboom
handled the press beautifully in the first quarter, turning the ball over only once as South
charged to a 24-16 lead at the end of the first.
The Thunderbirds battled back in the second quarter, converting on quick
transition baskets as South was slow to get back on the fast-break defense. East heated up
from the perimeter as South went cold, and the T-birds clawed their way back to within one at half,
37-36.
The third quarter belonged to Jerod Cossaboom. Cossaboom had 5
points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and a gorgeous feed to McGinnis slashing to the hoop... all in the
first 2 minutes of the quarter. The fans got a little tennis-style experience as the teams
raced back and forth across the floor. Sloppy ball control for both teams ensued
as they pressured each other on defense. But, behind an amazing effort by Cossaboom
and continued outstanding shooting by McKinney, South was able to extend its lead to 49-44.
McKinney and Bullock hit from three and McGinnis added several buckets off
of the offensive glass to extend the Black and Gold's lead to 10 points and a seemingly easy walk
to the finish line. However, East never gave up. The T-birds amped up their full-court
press and forced three turnovers for six points in 20 seconds of play. The Wolverines had a
game on their hands again. In the clutch, South turned to its expert marksman, and McKinney
drained a long three with 1:10 left to make it 73-67 and put the Black and Gold in the driver's
seat. South controlled the ball for the last minute, and after a wild last second scrum that
left East calling a time-out they didn't have, South walked away from the Thunderbird Coloseum with
a 73-71 win. McKinney led the Wolverines with 23 points, McGinnis was one rebound away from a
double-double, ending with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Cossaboom ended with 14 points and Tommy
Hobbs added 10... not to mention a bleacher-raising, get-out-of-my-house rejection off the
defensive glass.1/4/11 - West @ South
South Anchorage Varsity took their home court for the first time in 2011
against the #1 ranked West Eagles Tuesday. The packed crowd saw an exciting first half with
South leading for much of the first quarter. West came out in a full-court press which the
Wolverines handled with excellent ball movement and minimal turnovers in the first quarter.
Behind solid shooting by Jared Cossaboom, Tommy Hobbs, and TJ McKinney, South lead through four
minutes. Logan McGinnis owned the high post as he delivered several stellar passes to Hobbs
as he slashed to the bucket. Interior passing and ball control kept the Wolverines within 2
buckets at the end of 1.
Defensive hustle by Zach Lujan and a pair of three pointers by Hobbs kept
the Black and Gold within four points for most of the second quarter as well. Kyle Weir,
David Bullock, and McKinney patiently worked the ball back and forth against the press, swinging
West's defense and utilizing McGinnis and Edlund downcourt to good results. South's
half-court defense was solid, keeping hands in the face of some excellent Eagle shooters. The
Wolverine's poise began to show some cracks as West took advantage of several turnovers at the end
of the second quarter and converted on their transition offense, giving the Eagles a halftime lead
40-28.
A spat of turnovers in the third quarter allowed West to cruise to a
double-digit lead as South began to sag under the Eagle's constant full court zone press.
West's Devon Bookert added many of his game high 29 points in the third and effectively took the
Wolverines out of the game. South fought through the fourth quarter, never giving up, but
ended up on the losing end of a 61-87 score.
Hobbs led the Wolverines with 24 points, McGinnis added nine
and McKinney scored eight.
12/30/10 vs. Oscar Romero in Phoenix Donning their
home whites for the final game at the Cactus Jam Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, the South
Wolverines took the court against the Oscar Romero Ravens hailing from Edmonton, Alberta. The
Wolverines charged to a 9-0 lead behind David Bullock and TJ McKinney's three pointers. Louis
Page drained a three pointer as well as they drove the lead to 20-5 at the end of 1. The
second quarter had Kyle Weir, Matt Liverance, Mitch Bustamante, Tanner Evans, and Enrique Morgan
playing tough defense and pushing the score up to 35-13 by the end of the half.
A fast-paced second half created a tennis-match atmosphere as both teams
tried to force turnovers. The turnover margin ended up favoring the Black and Gold, and
McKinney continued to drain shot after shot as they increased their lead to 55-29.
Tommy Hobbs created some offense with slashing drives to the bucket, and Logan McGinnis kept
banging the boards on both the offensive and defensive ends. Bustamante, Liverance, Evans,
Morgan, and Zach Lujan ruled the fourth quarter and ushered in a solid win 65-33 for the
Wolverines.
12/27/10 Suited up in their home whites, the South High Wolverines took the court
against Gilbert Christian in their first game at the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Arizona.
South started the game tough with Tommy Hobbs protecting the basket and TJ McKinney hitting a few
three-pointers and a floater in the lane. But Gilbert Christian forced several turnovers and
took the first quarter lead 19-13. Throughout the second and third quarters, Gilbert settled
into a match-up zone that truly flummoxed the Wolverines. They worked the ball around the
perimeter, but couldn't seem to get an open shot or an open lane to the hoop. An
excellent shooting club, Gilbert Christian kept their press on and pieced together quick
transition buckets with three-pointers to charge ahead, finally ending the game up 83-43.
12/28/10 Outfitted in their visiting black and gold, South
High took on the Elida Bulldogs of Ohio in their second game at the Cactus Jam. The game
began as a tough back and forth battle with slashing drives and close-in shots. Both
teams changed up their defenses from traps to man-to-man to zone and South ended up down 14-12 at
the end of one. The Bulldogs half-court trap forced multiple turnovers in the second quarter
and capitalized with excellent transition offense, steaming to a double digit lead. The
Wolverines never gave up, however, and began to recognize the trap, clawing their way back to
within 9 by half-time.
Excellent 3-point shooting by Elida kept South's charge at bay,
while T.J. McKinney kept drilling his own three-pointers to keep the game within 8 points at the
beginning of the fourth quarter. After trailing most of the game, the Black and Gold refused
to give up, driving up their defensive tempo and forcing some turnovers of their own. Zach
Lujan nailed a 3-pointer to get within 7 points, and Logan McGinnis finished a break-away layup in
traffic to close it to 4. With a few minutes left, David Bullock and McKinney connected on
some long-range shots and Tommy Hobbs drove in a 3-pointer to close the gap to only 1 point, 60-59
with only 15 seconds left. After Elida only converted on one of their free-throws, the
Wolverines had one chance down the court, but fell just short missing two solid chances to tie the
game, ending the game down 61-59. After an excellent fourth quarter of hustle, the Wolverines
fell a hoop shy of a win for the second time in three games.
12/1810 The
Wolverines came up an ant's eyebrow short in a nail-biting seesaw battle with East on Saturday
night in the final game of the Cougar Tipoff Classic.
South opened the game with a salvo of 3-pointers by Tommy Hobbs, Jared
Cossaboom, and TJ McKinney, combined with solid defense and Logan McGinnis battling on the boards
to give them the lead 16-13 at the first break. But the Thunderbird's pressure defense and
up-tempo game forced South into several turnovers that turned into quick transition points for
East. Nevertheless, patience running their half-court offense created solid shots by McGinnis
and McKinney, keeping them in the game as they went to the locker room down only four points,
28-34.
The Wolverines put on some pressure defense of their own, and steals by
David Bullock, Cossaboom, and McGinnis brought on a few transition baskets and a tie.
However, the Thunderbirds were relentless in their attack, and began double-teaming South's guards
which allowed East to run the score a smidge, ending the third down 47-55.
As the fourth quarter opened it looked like East could run
away with it as they pushed their lead to double digits. But the Black and Gold
had other ideas. The Wolverines dug down deep and began to claw their way back into this
game. Tommy Hobbs had 8 points in 3 minutes and all of the Wolverines contributed
as McGinnis snagged a rebound and put it back in to tie the game
at 62. McKinney nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 1:14 left in the game to
give South the lead 65-64. Quickly however, East was able to get 2 points off of their
half-court offense, leaving South with a chance; a few seconds left in the game and
down by one. Their passing was crisp and they got it inside where East had to foul. But
a few missed free-throws and a possible put-back and the game slipped just out of
reach. One more free-throw by East gave them their final score, 65-67.
Great hustle by both teams made for an incredible game for the fans...
right down to the final
second.
12/17/10 The Southside Wolverines took care
of business against Lumen Christi, beating them 84-21 in a one-sided
routing.
12/16/10 - Cougar Tipoff Tournament vs.
Bartlett The Wolverines charged out of the gate Thursday against
Bartlett in the opening game of the Cougar Tipoff Classic leading 22-9 at the end of the first
quarter. Excellent passing and outstanding teamwork picked apart the Golden Bears' pressure
defense as Jared Cossaboom handled the backcourt pressure and Tommy Hobbs owned the boards.
Hobbs sliced to the hoop from high post while Max Edlund and David Bullock fed him in the
lane. Great interior passing led to several easy buckets in the lane for
other Wolverines as well. However, 5 straight turnovers by South in the second
quarter allowed Bartlett to claw back in the game, but a clutch three pointer by TJ McKinney kept
them in a double-digit lead at the half 33-21.
Bartlett kept up their full-court man-to-man pressure, but the Wolverines
kept calm and patiently worked their half-court offense. Points were hard to come by, but
Logan McGinnis banged away on defense against a much bigger opponent and Hobbs had several blocked
shots while the rest of the Wolverines played solid perimeter defense to keep the Bears at bay,
ending the quarter still in the lead 44-33.
A full-court trapping defense and up-tempo game finally began to take its
toll in the fourth quarter as the Black and Gold began to run out of steam. McKinney,
Bullock, and Cossaboom did their best to control the ball against a constant onslought of Bartlett
full-court defenders, but a few crucial turnovers in the middle of the court allowed the Bears a
few easy buckets, and they finally took the lead for the first time with 3 minutes left to go in
the game. After 3 1/2 quarters of excellent basketball, the Wolverines ran out of gas and let
the game slip away, ending up on the short end
54-63.
12/11/10 - Grace @
South T.J. McKinney had all 5 of South's points in the 1st quarter
as the Wolverines took almost the entire first half to get the engine running. But after
trailing 5 to 19 at the end of the first quarter, South fought back to tie it at 19 with
3 minutes left in the half. Even scoring by Tommy Hobbs, Kyle Weir, Max Edlund, and McKinney
brought the team back, trailing only 24-27 at half time.
At the opening of the 3rd quarter, it looked like
Grace would repeat their 1st quarter performance, but tenacious defense by the
Wolverines caused some turnovers and Hobbs began to get some points in the paint,
turning the tide for the Black and Gold. With 3 minutes left in the 3rd, South took the
lead for the first time, 34-32. As the fourth quarter rolled on, South's high pressure
defense began to take effect with great open-court defense by Jared Cossaboom and
Edlund. David Bullock hit a clutch three-pointer extending their lead 40-36 and they
never looked back.
Even scoring, tough defense, and Hobbs owning the boards proved too
much for Grace this year. A team effort to keep their composure allowed the Wolverines to
claw their way back and get their first win ever in this annual non-counting opening game between
the Grizzlies and the
Wolverines.
